Our approach

In 2024 we started working in partnership with the Children’s Liver Unit at King’s College Hospital. We use our youth work expertise to build holistic support networks for young liver patients while they are in hospital and after they have been discharged.

Our Liver Service aims to increase long-term survival rates for young liver patients by:

  • Improving clinic attendance
  • Empowering young people to engage with their treatment and take ownership of their condition
  • Improving their mental health

Our work

Inpatient work

We support young people aged 12-25 on wards who have had a transplant or are waiting for a transplant, or those who have been admitted with serious liver conditions. We help them to understand their condition, engage with their care, and offer psychosocial support after they are discharged.

Outpatient work

We support young people aged 12-25 attending clinics who are at risk of not engaging with treatment, not attending clinics, and/or have other psychosocial barriers.

Peer-to-peer mentoring

We link up current patients with other young people who have previously engaged with the service, to further empower them and prevent the isolation often felt by young people with chronic health conditions
