Camden Young People’s Mediation and Restorative Service: Annual report 2023-2024

A mediator sits down with a teenager in a library setting.

“You have helped me so much with everything, I can now speak to my parents so much better. Thank you – I don’t know how I would have managed without you.”

– Service user, aged 15

Catch22’s Camden Young People’s Mediation and Restorative service supports children and young people aged 14-24, and their families, from the London Borough of Camden, to prevent them from becoming at risk of homelessness.

The service provides tailored and targeted support, building positive communication within the family to reduce conflict and tension. The aims of the service are to:

  • ensure that all young people in Camden are supported to be able to address issues and strengthen relationships with their parents/guardian,
  • ensure that all young people feel that their voices are heard and are at the centre of their own care,
  • provide support to young people to deal with conflict and tension with a more positive approach and outcome, and
  • support the young person’s transition from childhood to adulthood with constructive coaching in positive communication within their key relationships.

The service supports young people whilst living at home or entering residential or foster care, as well as supporting young people in semi-independent supported living, to maintain their accommodation / tenancy and prevent placement breakdown.

Outcomes of service

In doing so, the service achieves a variety of outcomes, including:

  • prevention and reduction of conflict between young people and their parents, guardians and/or other family members,
  • young people remaining at home rather than going into care,
  • promotion of positive communication and appropriate boundary setting for young people and their families,
  • improved and enhanced communication and support for the relationship between the young person and their social worker, key worker, personal advisor, or other professional relationships,
  • young people gaining confidence in personal expression and positive interactions,
  • improved mental health for young people due to reduction of conflict in their lives, and
  • young people who are happier, and their well-being is supported, with positive communication and relationships as a key focus of our work.
